Biography
Abram Stevens Hewitt was a prominent American industrialist, engineer, and politician who played a significant role in the development of American iron and steel manufacturing during the late 19th century. Born into a family of iron manufacturers, Hewitt expanded his family's business interests and became known for his innovations in iron production and his advocacy for protective tariffs. Beyond his industrial pursuits, he served in Congress and was elected Mayor of New York City in 1887, where he focused on municipal reform and anti-corruption efforts.
