Biography
Alexander Hamilton Stephens was a Georgia politician and Confederate Vice President who played a significant role in Southern politics before, during, and after the Civil War. Despite his small physical stature and chronic health issues, Stephens was a powerful orator and influential political thinker who articulated the Confederate cause, most notably in his Cornerstone Speech of 1861. After the war, he served in Congress and as Governor of Georgia, attempting to navigate the complex politics of Reconstruction.
