Biography
Edward Bates (1793-1869) was an American jurist and politician who served as Attorney General of the United States under President Abraham Lincoln from 1861 to 1864. A native of Virginia who became a prominent St. Louis lawyer, Bates was known for his legal expertise and moderate Republican views. He played an important role in the Lincoln administration's legal strategy during the Civil War, including advice on constitutional matters related to the war effort.
