Eli Thayer

Biography

Eli Thayer was a Massachusetts educator, businessman, and politician who founded the Emigrant Aid Company to promote free-soil settlement in Kansas during the 1850s. His efforts were instrumental in the struggle over Kansas's status as a slave or free state. Thayer served in Congress and was a prominent voice for western expansion and anti-slavery principles.
