Henry Wager Halleck

Henry Wager Halleck was a prominent Union general and military theorist who served as General-in-Chief of the U.S. Army during the Civil War. A graduate of West Point and accomplished engineer, Halleck was known for his scholarly approach to military strategy and his translations of military treatises. Though his field command record was mixed, he proved invaluable as a strategic coordinator and administrator, serving as chief of staff under General Grant.
