Biography
Hugh McCulloch was born in Maine and became one of the nation's leading financial experts during the nineteenth century. He served as Comptroller of the Currency and then as Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, playing a crucial role in managing federal finances during the Civil War and the subsequent Reconstruction period. McCulloch was known for his conservative fiscal policies and remained influential in American financial circles well into his later years.
