J.G. Foster

Biography

General John Gray Foster (1823-1874) was a distinguished Union Army engineer and commander during the American Civil War. He served in various capacities including command of the Department of the South and played a crucial role in coastal operations and fortification strategy. Foster was known for his technical expertise in military engineering and his leadership of important defensive and offensive operations, particularly in the Carolinas and Florida theaters during the latter stages of the war.
