Biography

Jesse Root Grant (1794-1873) was an American businessman and the father of General Ulysses S. Grant. A tanner by trade, Jesse Grant was known for his strong personality and business acumen, establishing a successful leather tanning operation in Ohio. Though he had a strained relationship with his famous son, Jesse Grant lived to see Ulysses achieve military prominence during the Civil War and political success as President.
