Biography

John Adolphus Dahlgren was a pioneering naval officer and ordnance expert who revolutionized American naval artillery during the 19th century. Rising through the ranks of the U.S. Navy, Dahlgren developed innovative cannon designs that became known as Dahlgren guns, which were widely adopted by both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. His technical expertise and leadership of the Washington Navy Yard made him one of the most influential naval officers of his era, and he eventually achieved the rank of Rear Admiral.
