Biography
John Buford was a Union cavalry officer whose reconnaissance and tactical decisions significantly influenced the outcome of the Battle of Gettysburg. Commanding the First Division of the Cavalry Corps, his early arrival and positioning on July 1, 1863, helped secure advantageous ground for Union forces. Though his military career was cut short by illness, Buford is remembered as one of the most capable cavalry commanders of the Civil War.
