Lew Wallace

Lew Wallace was an accomplished military officer, author, and diplomat who achieved prominence during the American Civil War. Born in Indiana, he rose to the rank of major general and served in several important campaigns, including the Battle of Fort Donelson and the defense of Cincinnati. After the war, he served as governor of the New Mexico Territory and later as minister to Turkey, while simultaneously establishing himself as a successful novelist, most famously writing 'Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.'
