Biography

M.R.H. Garnett was a Virginia politician and planter whose family held considerable influence in the Old Dominion during the antebellum and Reconstruction periods. Active in state politics, Garnett represented Virginia interests during a transformative period in American history. He was part of the Virginia gentry class that sought to maintain political influence through the Civil War and subsequent Reconstruction.
