Robert Anderson

Biography

Robert Anderson was a career United States Army officer who rose to prominence during the American Civil War. Born in Kentucky to a slaveholding family, Anderson remained loyal to the Union despite his Southern origins. He is best remembered as the commander of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor when Confederate forces attacked the installation on April 12, 1861, an event that marked the beginning of the Civil War.
