Biography
Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873) was a prominent American politician, jurist, and abolitionist who served as Chief Justice of the United States. Before his appointment to the Supreme Court, Chase held the positions of Senator and Governor of Ohio, as well as Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln. He was instrumental in the establishment of the National Banking System and played a crucial role in financing the Union during the Civil War.
