Samuel Clarke Pomeroy was a prominent Republican politician and abolitionist who represented Kansas in the United States Senate from 1861 to 1873. Born in Southampton, New York, he moved to Kansas Territory in the 1850s where he became deeply involved in the Free-Soil movement and helped establish the New England Emigrant Aid Company's settlements. As a senator, he was known for his strong antislavery stance and his advocacy for Native American rights, though his later career was marked by financial controversies.
