Biography
Schuyler Colfax was a prominent Republican politician and journalist who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1863 to 1869. He was elected Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant, serving from 1869 to 1873. Though initially popular, his political career declined following his involvement in the Credit Mobilier scandal of the early 1870s.
