Ulysses S. Grant was an American military commander and the 18th President of the United States. Rising to prominence during the American Civil War, Grant earned his reputation as a decisive and effective general, ultimately commanding all Union armies and leading the North to victory. His military success and national prominence made him an attractive candidate for the presidency, and he served two terms from 1869 to 1877, though his administration was marked by both Reconstruction efforts and significant corruption scandals.
