William Henry French was born in 1815 in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from West Point in 1833. He served as a major general in the Union Army, commanding divisions and corps in both the Eastern and Western Theaters of the Civil War. French participated in major battles including Antietam and Gettysburg, and later commanded the Department of the Gulf. Known for his steady, reliable service rather than flashy tactics, French remained in the military after the war and eventually rose to the rank of full general before his retirement.
