Biography

William Tecumseh Sherman was one of the most influential Union generals of the American Civil War, known for his innovative military strategies and his devastating March to the Sea through Georgia. A West Point graduate and experienced officer, Sherman rose to prominence under Grant and became commanding general of the Military Division of the Mississippi. His philosophy of total war, which targeted civilian infrastructure alongside military forces, was controversial but effective, and he remained a prominent military figure after the war, eventually serving as Commanding General of the U.S. Army.
