Winfield Scott Hancock was one of the Union Army's most respected generals during the American Civil War, earning the nickname 'The Superb' for his leadership abilities. A West Point graduate and Mexican-American War veteran, Hancock distinguished himself at major battles including Gettysburg, where his defense of the Union center proved crucial to the Northern victory. After the war, he served in various military posts and was the Democratic nominee for President in 1880, losing to James A. Garfield.
