Biography

Zachariah Chandler was a leading Republican statesman and businessman who represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate for two terms. Born in New Hampshire, he moved to Detroit where he established himself as a merchant and political figure. A staunch abolitionist and Radical Republican, Chandler was deeply involved in Civil War politics and later served as Secretary of the Interior, where he advocated for progressive policies regarding Native American affairs and public lands.
