Biography

John Godfrey Saxe (1816-1887) was an American poet, humorist, and man of letters known for his witty verse and satirical writings. Born in Vermont, he gained prominence in the mid-nineteenth century as a contributor to literary magazines and newspapers, where his clever wordplay and humorous observations on contemporary life delighted readers. Though not achieving the lasting fame of some of his contemporaries, Saxe was respected in literary circles for his technical skill and his ability to blend humor with social commentary.
