Biography
John Ellis Wool was born in 1784 in Newburgh, New York, and became one of the United States Army's most experienced officers. He served with distinction in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, where he led troops in several major campaigns including the capture of Saltillo. During the Civil War, despite his advanced age, Wool remained active in military service, commanding the Department of the East and later the Middle Department, earning respect for his tactical acumen and steady leadership throughout the conflict.
