John Floyd was a prominent Virginia politician and military figure in the antebellum period. He served as Governor of Virginia and later as Secretary of War under President James Buchanan, a position he held until the outbreak of the Civil War. Floyd's tenure as Secretary of War was controversial, as he was accused of transferring military supplies to Southern arsenals in anticipation of secession.
